cat: write error: No space left on device

I am trying to create new files under my directory...but i getting the following message...
cat: write error: No space left on device

How do we handle this error.

I am not getting this error when I login as the super user

You're out of space. This isn't rocket science. Smilie

Root is given a few of it's own private sectors in a partition so that it can still do things when the partition fills up, as you can see.

I deleted all my other directories after getting this message, but it didn't help. Smilie

give the return status of $? after executing the cat

and the output of disk space in your current mount

df -k .

I am getting error in a shell script having a simple date command. Error is " write to 1 failed ". We saw that /tmp folder was 100% full.
