Data sound issues and hangging up
I am fairly new to unix, I have recently installed 7.2 red hat as a work station. In my hard ware browe i think it is. I can see my sound card listed there but it does not work. I have tried sndcnfig and the shell can not find it. I am lost here. my sound card is sound blaster live value.

Also this could be related but my tower start to make a high pitched squel and then after a bit my systems freezes.
if anyone has any suggestions that would be great thanks

Check out the sound HOWTO's and MINI-HOWTO's at the linux documentation project <i>www.linuxdoc.org</i>. I had the same problem and found the answer there. Basically, my BIOS settings had to be altered to force the sound cards IRQ to 9 from 10 (10 is the CD's IRQ). I was able to get my sound working by telling my BIOS that IRQ10 was for ISA/EISA legacy hardware. This change moved the sound card to IRQ 9 where it should be.

As far as your system making a high pitch squeal, then freezes, check your CPU fan. I bet thats it. I have had this problem before.
