system requirement for unix

I want to try running the free down load from sun, their solaris 8.
I have an intel pentium 3, 550 mhz, 8 GB drive, with 128 ram. I this anough to run a unix os like solaris 8. Also is their a browser that I could use with solaris8 so as to connect to the internet. Does ie have a version for unix.
Does anyone know where I can down load a free version of apache?
I'm such a newbe that I figure if I can get unix os running on my system and get setup to connect to the net This could help my learning curve. Every thing at this point is greek to me.
Thanks for all your help!!

You have many questions, but I will try to answer them all.

First, you should have enough system resources for Solaris. You will be suprised with how little the resource requirements are for Unix compared to Windows.

Netscape runs on Solaris. You can download a copy from netscape.com.

Apache, you can get that from many sources. apache.org is probably a good place to start.

Part of the problem you will start to see is the fact that there aren't many programs written for x86 Solaris. I am not sure if Apache is or not.

If you just want a unix platform on a PC, Linux may be a better way to go.

Hope this gets you started,
TioTony

Thanks you answered a lot. And,

My plans are to setup my home computer as an internet server.
I've been checking redhat standared they say it comes with apache and ftp and email ect. Will this work to setup a unix server to host sites on the internet?
Thank you

Yes, you can do that with Linux with no problem. My background is in Sun, but as far as home computing goes, Linux is much better, mostly because of cost. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have an Ultra 10 for my desktop, but software, etc is expensive in most cases. With Linux, you can find almost anything you need and it is usually free. I have never paid for any Linux software to date. There is definitely a lot of configuration involved in setting up an ISP, but I think you will find Linux to be cheaper and probably function better then x86 Sun.
