Question Network monitoring

Is there any way to check up the TCP/Ip port connectivity( healthiness ) without using ping or icmp calls ?

If you're talking about watching ports locally, you can use netstat or even better, lsof. If you're trying to monitor remotely, SNMP may be able to help, but I'm not 100% sure about that...

I ever used HP Openview NNM to manage a network and monitor the TCP/IP connection health.

NNM is based on SNMP, but it only use SNMP poll to check the status of nodes that support SNMP. It still use ICMP ping to check the TCP/IP connection health. If I use fireware and forbid ICMP ECHO REPLY, NNM will show the link is down.

Whenever i start my server it takes app 2 minutes to get into network (After starting the network service on boot). monitoring network traffic

there are commands to monitor the memory, paging, io... how about network traffic. i mean commands to see whether the network traffic (LAN) is congested? the closest i got is netstat thanks (6 Replies)
