hello all,

how end of a file is detected in UNIX system?

does it make use of any special symbols to identify the EOF? Smilie

No special characters.

The unix filesystem keeps track of the end of the file without using special characters in the file. Windows does use special characters: ASCII 26 for EOF of text files. Which causes a lot of confusion.

The filesystem knows exactly how many bytes are in the file - when your process reads the file, the kernel keeps track of the location with a file pointer. When the file pointer reaches the offset = length of file, the system stops advancing the file pointer = EOF.

i.e while ((ch = getchar()) ! = EOF)

what would be the value of EOF when end is reached.

EOF is a C thing. It's defined to be -1
