Question Win98 and linux server

Another newbie searching for answers. I am tired of messing with hosting companies and would like to setup my own server. Can I run a server using linux and apache one one HD and win98 on another harddrive. I would use Win98 as I do now and let the server software run in the background. Is this possible--advisable, or do I need two machines? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

You could run Linux as the main OS then use VMware to allow win98 to run on top of linux.

Alternatively you could run it the other way around however, win98 isn't that stable, therefore any crashes in win98 could bring Vmware down along with Linux.

The third option would be to use separate machines, you can pickup second hand PCs relatively cheaply so this might be more cost efficient than the previous options.

Okay, so what is VMWARE and is there someplace I can get a free download?

I have just downloaded ASPLinux, will this Linux plateform run as you have just described?

Thanks again for the info.

I think i'm right in saying that Vmware is an OS emulator, each OS that you want to run on top of the host's machine runs in a virtual machine.
Real partitions and virtual partitions are catered for, so you don't need to repartition your drives.

Vmware is a commercial product starting at $49.95, although you can download a 30 day trial version from:
https://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/newstore/index.jsp

ASPLinux should run as I described it's 100% compatible with Red Hat which runs Vmware okay.

installing apache

I probabaly shouldn't even be doing these with my lack of know how, but I'm stuborn that way. I got ASP installed and it ate up a whole HD and everything on it. It also partioned and gives a choice as to which system I want to boot with, so that's one problem fixed. Now if I could get apache to instal I'd be uptown.

I would be more than grateful for any help from anyone out there.

Sorry I'm being such a pest.

Thank again

According to the instructions, I am supposted to first build a source tree by running ./buildconf But ASPLinux keeps giving me a file not found error. How do I "run" ./buildconf?
