UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi,

sorry to ask and exceedingly dumb question, but as far as UNIX goes I really am the newbiest of the newbies. I've been posed a question by one of my bosses, I'll break it down.

He says
"We have a big AIX box and I'd like to use Notes to handle the SMTP side of things."
I say,
"Okay I know nothing I'll see what I can find out."

So here I am I gotta a coupla questions,
1) Is AIX like UNIX? What are the differences?
2) Am I looking at the right forum? If not can someone point me in the right direction? If I am please go to question 3...
3) Has anyone run DominoR5 on AIX and what did they find?
4) Has anyone run DR5 and SMTP on AIX?
5) Finally, say I didn't want to run Domino, I've heard a tiny bit about Sendmail, whats that an SMTP handler? Could I use this instead of Domino? Does it work on AIX?

Well I can address some of your questions...

AIX - Advanced Interactive eXecutive
It IS UNIX. It was originally based on the AT&T UNIX SVR4
kernel. Yes it will run DR5 and yes it will run sendmail.
sendmail usually ships with AIX, Domino does not (costs extra).
sendmail on AIX runs absolutely fine however, your organization
may have some internal requirements that Domino could
fulfill and sendmail cannot. Domino can be more closely
compared to MS-Exchange in the fact that you get more of
a "work-group" environment (i.e. personal calendars, public
calendars, etc, etc). Domino fully supports SMTP as well.
