sed Command Output

I want to know how this command output will be

sed 's/^"\(.*\)"$/\1/' <filename>
# 2

It removes double quotes at line start and line end in every line.

The text in between is captured in \( \) and re-inserted by the \1
A simpler coding is
Code:
sed 's/^"//; s/"$//' <filename>

Remove at the start a ", then remove a " at the end.

Yes and no: consider this sample file:

Code:
"mytest"
"mytest
mytest"

The original example would remove the double-quotes only in line 1 whereas your code would remove all of them. Given, it might be what was intended anyway, but there is indeed a difference, yes?

I hope this helps.
