Replace only column 1 entries

I want to selectively replace column1 entries ofmy file.

My input file looks like :

Code:
MFTR01000729.1 template test 1 2544 . + . det=item0;ref=taxes:255;details on -individual;local_id=i21;key=rc;temp=19.75 N 34.23 E;disco_type=trail qerty;train=english
MFTR01001239.1 template list 64 2040 . - . det=test0;Parent=item0;key=pair;product=target-market sky
MFTR01000719.1 template in 2002 2040 . - . det=item1;Parent=item0;key=pair;product=target-market sky
MFTR01002225.1 template test 1 2544 . + . det=item5;ref=taxes:255;details on -individual;local_id=i265;key=Mrc;temp=49.25 N 54.22 E;disco_type=trail qUerty;train=english
MFTR01002227.1 template list 64 2040 . - . det=test6;Parent=item6;key=pair;product=target-market sky
MFTR01000121.1 template in 2002 2040 . - . det=item7;Parent=item7;key=pair;product=target-market sky

My needed output is

Code:
product729 template test 1 2544 . + . det=item0;ref=taxes:255;details on -individual;local_id=i21;key=rc;temp=19.75 N 34.23 E;disco_type=trail qerty;train=english
product1239 template list 64 2040 . - . det=test0;Parent=item0;key=pair;product=target-market sky
product719 template in 2002 2040 . - . det=item1;Parent=item0;key=pair;product=target-market sky
product2225 template test 1 2544 . + . det=item5;ref=taxes:255;details on -individual;local_id=i265;key=Mrc;temp=49.25 N 54.22 E;disco_type=trail qUerty;train=english
product2227 template list 64 2040 . - . det=test6;Parent=item6;key=pair;product=target-market sky
product121 template in 2002 2040 . - . det=item7;Parent=item7;key=pair;product=target-market sky

I did
Code:
sed 's/MFTR01*/product/g' input> output

It didnt work completely as my required output diddn't need the .1 in the first columns.

Any suggestions?

Making lots of assumptions about your input data format and correcting the sed BRE you used to get output closer to what you said you want, you could try:
Code:
sed 's/MFTR010*/product/;s/\.1//' input > output

# 3
A different option:
Code:
perl -pe 's/^MFTR010+(\d+)\S*/product$1/' pita_m.file > result.file
