As has been said many times before, any use of echo when the 1st argument starts with a hyphen or when any argument contains a backslash character produces output that varies considerably from system to system and shell to shell. Either of the following should do what you want portably:
Code:
echo 'This is a header
'

or:
Code:
printf 'This is a header\n\n'

To add, in general it would be better to specify the printf format string separately, so:
Code:
printf '%s\n\n' 'This is a header'

Longhand using OSX 10.7.5, default bash terminal calling 'sh' and using '/bin/echo' that has no -e or -E...
(Note the inverted commas. Also the '>' after 'newline="<CR>' below is a waiting state for further input in interactive mode.)
Code:

AMIGA:barrywalker~> /bin/echo "This is a line.$newline""And this is another line.$newline""And this is a third line."
This is a line.
And this is another line.
And this is a third line.
