Copy/paste in vi editor

Hello guys,

I am trying to copy a line in vi editor and paste it with below commands but paste command is not working and instead of paste action prints the p character!!

I should also mention that the server is Solaris...

1) crontab -e
2) j to move down
3) yy to copy the line
4) o to create a new line
5) p to paste it

I use Y to copy a line and P to paste the line. Make sure that you are not in insert mode first. You can hit ESC to toggle back to command mode.

Have you looked at this?

Just eliminate step 4. In this case p will paste that yanked line below where the cursor is. P will insert it above.

Spot on! The "o" ("open") inserts a blank line AND switches the editor session to input mode, placing you on that line! Therefore "p" is not a command any more but a mere character (which is duly inserted.

I hope this helps.
