Too many files!

Hi,

I am trying to uncompress files in a set of nested directories (recursively). I give the following command:

Code:
find . -name '*.gz' -execdir gunzip '{}' ';'

1. It works when there are a reasonable number of files, but when there are a large number of files (hundreds?), the command returns 'Too many files' and crashes out. How can I get around this?

2. How can I check if no files are returned in a command? For example:

Code:
myfiles=`find . -name *.txt`

Can I check for an empty string (i.e. "$myfiles=="") to test whether no filenames were returned? Else, how should I do this?

thanks!

1. See if the + variation works better. Does -exec show the same behavior?:
Code:
find . -name '*.gz' -execdir gunzip {} +

From man find:
Code:
     -execdir utility [argument ...] ;
             The -execdir primary is identical to the -exec primary with the exception that utility will be executed
             from the directory that holds the current file. The filename substituted for the string ``{}'' is not
             qualified.

Code:
     -execdir utility [argument ...] {} +
             Same as -execdir, except that ``{}'' is replaced with as many pathnames as possible for each invocation of
             utility. This behaviour is similar to that of xargs(1).
