What are the variables DAY, H, D, and a intended to be used for?

Shell variables are not available inside an awk script unless you explicitly set an awk variable to the value of that shell variable when you invoke awk.

Why use:

cat d1 | while read line
do
a=$(echo $line | awk '{print $1}')
n=$(echo $line | awk '{print $2}')
...
done

instead of just using:

while read a n
do
        ...
done < d1

which doesn't need to invoke awk twice for each input line and cat, but produces exactly the same results?

Would something like this do what you're trying to do?:

If you want to try this script on a Solaris/SunOS system, change awk to /usr/xpg4/bin/awk.
