Hi All,

Can anyone please help in setting up Unix script for sending text messages on mobile??
Actually scenario is we want notification when there is any failures in our processes or if any service goes down we must be notified by a text message on our mobile, we already have email notifications for the same.

Your replies will be very helpful.

SMS means sending an email message to a phone number usually @phonecompany.com

For example vtext.com used to be the verizon SMS address, may still be.

Say phone number is 123 123-4567, and vtext.com is the SMS connection.

Code:

echo "Fatal error on `hostname`" | mailx -s "`hostname` error" 1231234567@vtext.com

You will have to get your telephony guy at your company to give you the part that 'vtext.com' occupies. Our apple phones use the apple appliance and the 'baz' system to email. YMMV. Your telphony guy has to know or know how to find out.

After a little research and testing I found out the following:
There is no reliable way to determine the carrier from the phone number for free. Lookup services charge about 10US per 1000 lookups.
If you create the original (mms) email using sendmail instead of mail, you can fake the "from" and "replyto" email addresses so that the recipient of the text can send a text reply directly to the phone of the mail originator.
