Uniq and sort -u

Hello all,

Need to pick your brains,

I have a 10Gb file where each row is a name, I am expecting about 50 names in total. So there are a lot of repetitions in clusters.

So I want to do a

Code:
sort -u file

Will it be considerably faster or slower to use a uniq before piping it to sort -u ? Does consolidating all the neighbors first help in this case?

Code:
cat file | uniq | sort -u

My file looks like

Code:
name1
name1
name1
name2
name2
name2
name1
....

name50

To start with, the file has to be sorted in order to use uniq command...

yes, I realize that,,, but I was going to use uniq just to consolidate clusters of values together..since sorting first will be expensive?

50 names -- or 50,000 -- is easily small enough to store in a table or array of some kind, just record what names you see and print them all when done.

Code:
awk '{ A[$1] } END { for(X in A) print X }' inputfile | sort

This method should be efficient for anything up to tens of thousands of (distinct) names.
