I have code like below

disk_list=$(ls /root/file1)

for disk in $disk_list
do
pvcreate $i
done

I know what pvcreate command does, but I do not understand what this $i do here. can someone please explain.

For your loop to work, it should be for i in... and not disk...
the variable i is referenced nowhere...

This is a strange code snippet. Unless /root/file1 is a directory - which were OK, but a bit uncommon - disk_list will hold just that string - if the file exists. So the for loop would loop exactly once, with the disk variable holding that string again.
The i variable is undefined, at least in that snippet, so pvcreate would be run without any parameter supplied, so would use its default settings.
