interesting finding... telnet shows the same connection/disconnection behavior

Code:
[user@m1 ~]$ telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 22
Trying xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx...
Connected to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.

Connection closed by foreign host.

It does sound like the Windows equivalent of hosts.allow/deny. I've no idea what that is, though...

Solved.

for future reference: the application on server side was maintaining an IP whitelist and my client was getting banned because of a trailing pace in the configuration entry.
