Crontab

Can crontab be removed from an AIX system. We had a script that was running on the system. It stopped working. An outside vendor said that crontab does not exist on the system. and that is why it is not running. How can i verify this and get it back on the systems if needed?

thanks

A crontab generally refers to a file that the cron daemon processes. Each user can have a crontab file. Do an
Code:
ls -l /var/spool/cron/crontabs

to look for various user crontab files.
Make sure the cron daemon is running, do...
Code:
ps -aef | grep cron | grep -v grep

Make sure it is in the /etc/inittab, do
Code:
grep cron /etc/inittab

it should look like this for an AIX system
Code:
cron:23456789:respawn:/usr/sbin/cron

Other useful commands..
Code:
crontab -l #list current user crontab
crontab -e #edit current user crontab

Looks like the root crontab file is missing, what was the name of the script you had running? You can simply become root and do a crontab -e to recreate it; however, I suggest trying to recover it in the event you have other important tasks in it.

As blackrageous suggested, restore the original file for root, under /var/spool/cron/crontabs.
