Facing difficulties to untar a tra.gz file

Hi ,

I trying to cp a files to one location and trying to untar there, the tar.gz files get copied to the specified location but wont untar. Here is what i did

Code:
if cp /path/of/the/file.tar.gz /path/to/the/file/file.tar.gz
  then
  tar -zxvf /path/to/the/file/file.tar.gz
echo "FILE COPIED TO THE LOCATION"
      else
echo "FILE COULD NOT BE COPIED LOCATION"

I guess it is extracting, but it will extract it to the current working directory where you are running your script.

You have to specify the directory:
Code:
tar -zxvf /path/to/the/file/file.tar.gz -C /path/to/the/file/

so here you mean to say

Code:
tar -zxvf /source/path -C /destination/path
