Hello,
I'm using a 2TB SAN partition to process database journal files, produce reports, and save/accumate journal extracts and reports. This is an AIX 6.1 system. It's getting to be time to expand the size, but in collecting data to put into a request I found large discrepancies between the usage reported by the "df -k" and the "du -s -k" commands. "df -k" always reports a higher figure, but the discrepancy varies between 100GB - 400GB. The mount point is "/data", and at the moment:
The "du -s -k" figure is about 160GB lower, but it has been as much as 400GB difference.
What could be causing this? Does it indicate a problem with the file system? Does "du" skip hidden files? (There are none in /data.) Or perhaps "du" skips open files or files being written?
UNIX supports sparse files, which let you do this:
What I did was I told dd to seek 321 megabytes ahead then write 'asdf' there. The 321 megabytes before it is not actually stored, and if you read it, will contain nothing but ASCII nulls.
So your data directory probably contains sparse files. Not all of their contents are actually stored on disk, some of them is left 'empty'.
Also remember, du gives you how much disk is used. Not just how large the data is, but also things like inode and whatever clusters are used to track it. It's not supposed to agree with ls exactly.
