Remove carriage return

I need to remove the carriage return comes inbetween the record.
Need to have CR only at the end.

I used the below command.
Code:
tr -d '\n' < filewithcarriagereturns > filewithoutcarriagereturns

But its removing all the CR and giving one line output.

Input File:

Code:
12345
abcdegh
6789qwerty
8776poiuy
13579as
dfg

Expected output:
Code:
12345abcdegh
6789qwerty
8776poiuy
13579asdfg

Kindly suggest.

'\n' is linefeed, to remove carriage return, use '\r'

That is vague... AIX? HP-UX? SOLARIS, SCO? DEC?

Do you know the origin of file ( Windows?) ?
What do you see when you edit the file with vi? (Do you see ^M at the end of eache line?...)

It looks as though each line starts with numerical and ends with alpha characters.
It would be much better to have a real sample of data to confirm this.
Also what have you tried to correct the single line situation?
Which OS is it?
Which shell you are using?
Pseudo-code:-
Code:
Create a _variable_ as a null value.
Create a loop to......
Traverse the line until you reach the next numarical value.
Copy this string into the _variable_.
Add a newline character.
Repeat until finished.

Use something like ${variable:$position_in_master_string:1} in your loop and rebuild your string...
