UNIX string connection to sql server db
Hi,
i have to perform a connection from unix to sql server database, using TCP protocol.
I have all connection parameters (user,pwd,server_name,port,db_name).
How can i perform this connection, by unix console ?

is it available a command similar to this one (for oracle):

sqlplus 'user/password@(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(Host = server_name)(Port = portnumber)))(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = dbname)(SERVER = DEDICATED)))'

This requires system level changes, like adding a driver usually.

If you are on Linux, Microsoft has a driver with an api that will let you connect.

Otherwise, try using FreeTDS (linux oriented)
FreeTDS.org
From there go to and get the ODBC tools:
unixODBC

There is no builtin connection tool for any UNIX I know about that will let you do this without major fiddling around.
