It won't be the DHCP setup (ie, ip address leasing) but it might be something to do with the domain security settings.

At the moment my thinking would be that the problem is to do with that particular client (domain settings, anti-virus, firewall, another interfering service or whatever) rather than a problem with the unix box or the network.

I know it's time consuming but if you have a spare machine, I'd be tempted to throw W7 on it and just configure it for ftp. Put it right next to the failing client (same network segment) and test it. Don't join it to the domain initially until you've tested ftp.

I have a laptop that has W7 on it, could this be used?

I'd say yes. Configure the notebook for ftp and put it right next to the client. See if ftp works.

Okay, I wont be able to access the UNIX box if im not on the network?

Of course you need to connect it to the network and attempt to mimic the same operation. If necessary pinch the clients network cable (if it's the only connection available) and try it.

Could it be to do with this:

Or is this just a log of whats happened ? Like event viewer type?

Well I reckon that confirms the diagnosis that it's the client (firewall) that's blocking the ftp session (because that's exactly what it says).

ftp can use dynamic ports so they're not always the same ports used. However, the client knows that it's ftp (not something else) and it's configured to not allow it.

Within Windows 7/8 you can configure an "exception" to make the firewall to pass a particular application's traffic but I'm not the one to tell you how to do that. It's a Windoze issue.

However, I repeat, I reckon the diagnosis is correct. That client is the problem.

Wait a bit and see whether you get any further advice and, if not, ask a moderator to move the thread into the Windows forum where the right experts will see it. This ain't rocket science for the right expert.

If you look at a working client what does it say on the firewall rules????
