one thing I don't understand. when I use

(without dot).
it doesn't return any record. for my understanding, dot match only one charactor. "*' matchs zero or more duplicates. when I use

'ABC[0-9]*$'

for the name 'ABC2' or 'ABC' or 'ABC123' should return.

Would you please let me know where I am wrong?

ABC[0-9]* in shell is not the same thing as ABC[0-9]* in grep, however.

Arguably though ls abc[0-9]* could work better since it would insist on at least one digit, where grep wouldn't.

Well, do you have any records matching that regex? ABC, followed by zero or more digits and absolutely nothing more? The $ forces it to accept only matches that end right there.
