Moving files to a folder with a variable name

hello there- first post here- maybe someone can help-

Basically I am trying to copy the contents of a folder to a different folder that has a variable name.

the content I want to copy would be in a folder on my desktop called: myfolder

the variable folder would look something like: 766598.default

The underlined numbers are the variable part-

I am looking for a unix command to do this

Code:
cp myfolder/* ~/Desktop/*.default/

# 3

Code:
var=766598
cp myfolder/* "$var".default

Can I suggest that you make sure that the value is set to something at least and check that it is a directory before you issue the copy.

Consider these:-
  1. cp prod-data/* $var and directory does not exist
You will create a file called $var and will copy all the file in order over it, so you will end up with just a copy of the last file.
  2. cp prod-data/* $var and var is null
You will overwrite the last file in the source area with every file in turn, leaving you with the penultimate file twice in the source directory
  3. cp prod-data/* $var.default and directory does not exist
As for case 1, but the file will be called $var.default
  4. cp prod-data/* $var.default and var is null
As for case 1, but the created file is just called .default

Perhaps some tests before you execute would be wise to consider:-
Code:
if [ ! -d $var.default ]
then
echo "$var.default is not a directory"
fi

I learnt this from a 'less than excellent' experience.

I hope that this helps you doing what I did.
