real performance differences between sources and binaries

Is there a huge performance issue between compiling the source vs. installing the binary...

Or is this primarily an issue of stability?

the only differance would be.

a) the binary is compiled useing the defaults.
b) compiling source allowes the binary to be tailored to your system.
