Even in Windows, you only get 10.204.129.246/C because someone using 10.204.129.246 made a share named C.

If you haven't configured 10.204.129.234's Samba to share anything, you're going to have a very, very hard time logging into any shares.

You don't need Samba to mount -t cifs, by the way.

confused

These ip addresses are going to biotech machines and a lot of their contents were developed by previous IT hires. aka I'm not sure what's in a lot of them and also can't get into them directly because they are being used by our clinical staff. This is the number one reason I need the mount.

I'm guessing out previous IT guy made the shared C in the Win machines.
I haven't configured .234's samba, but I didn't do any modifying on the windows 246 and was able to get into it.

I'm confused. If I don't need samba to mount -t cifs? Then whey do I need to configure it. I don't understand how it works.

mount -t cifs is a driver in the Linux kernel(one of two, actually!) which Samba is unnecessary for. I don't know what you configured Samba for either.

Samba's generally used as a server, not client, though it does include a few useful utilities.

What's the second driver?

What's the second driver?

Also, do you have any other suggestions for getting into this mac?

smbfs is the old-fashioned driver, now supplanted by cifs because of its limitations.

First, you will have to find out what shares these boxes export, if any. If they don't, that would be your problem -- they aren't there.

Yes, the target server needs to run samba!
Make sure you mount a share that exists. I doubt c$ is "exported" from that target server. Use smbclient -L to see existing shares.
If you don't have samba on the remote machine, nfs might be an option.
