how to take only a portion of a string...? say I search for a character in a string, and I want the content that starts after the character that I search for.

In order to help you, we would have to see what you did so far and what you can't do...
You dont expect folk here to do the job for you do you?

I have kept the code that I made, in my office computer, and now I am at home. And no, I don't expect any folks here to do my job. I am basically a tester, and just got into a data warehouse project where I am working with unix and trying to use shell scripts to few manual things that I do, which takes a lot of time. I have just started to learn shell scripting and your reply pushes me even harder to learn and create this script on my own. So let me try for some more times with as minimal help as possible. I have changed my post too.

You first mail was quite good, even very good if you had submitted what you tried at the same time, we could then see what needd to be explained, give hints etc...
I suggest you write what you can and submit, and let us comment what you have done, that would be the fastest for you to learn
