Assuming you are using ksh93 and not pdksh or ksh88:
Code:
$ printf "Date: %T\n" now
Date: Fri Oct 11 11:33:55 EDT 2013
$ printf "Date: %(%D)T\n" now
Date: 10/11/13
$ printf "Date: %(%D)T\n" "2 days ago"
Date: 10/09/13
$ printf "Date: %(%D)T\n" "4 weeks ago"
Date: 09/09/13

Its returning an error message you are too lazy to transmit...
the previous post was clear enough: the given example work for ksh93!
YOU dont event mention what ksh you are using nor the OS...

look: this is an AIX box:
Code:
n12:/home/vbe $ oslevel
7.1.0.0
n12:/home/vbe $ printf "Date: %(%D)T\n" "4 weeks ago"
/usr/dt/bin/dtksh: printf: T: unknown format specifier
n12:/home/vbe $ ksh93
n12:/home/vbe $ printf "Date: %(%D)T\n" "4 weeks ago"
Date: 09/09/13

Code:
$ n=$((1*24))
$ TZ=EST+${n} date +%F
2013-10-13
$ n=$((2*24))
$ TZ=EST+${n} date +%F
2013-10-12

Hi Sathya,

it says EST not found. could you pls help me understand your code ?

also only the following piece seems to be working

Code:
$ date '+DATE: %F'

which is giving the following output, which is the current date

Code:
DATE: 2013-10-14

need some way to subtract 'n' number of days from it..

@Murphy
even your code doesnt seem to work, it doesnt seem to recognize "2 days ago"

PS : i am not sure of the version of my shell, its KSH but whether its 88 or not, cant say

i tried the following to get the version
when i do a echo $0 , i just get 'ksh' without any version with it .. and a uname -r returns '5.10'

All your help is really appreciated, thanks !
