Print the output of date command

A simple date command gives the following

Code:
Monday, October 14, 2013 8:59:28 AM CDT

# 10
Old 10-14-2013
Instead of EST, try CDT now
Code:
$ n=$((1*24))
$ TZ=CDT+${n} date +%F

# 11
Old 10-14-2013
it now says

Code:
ksh: CDT: not found

Request your help on decoding this. Thanks
That would indicate Solaris 10. The ksh93 version is not recent enough to support %T (and the underlying date system does not support "ago", for example)..

Your best bet may be to use perl . For example:
Code:
perl -MPOSIX -e 'print strftime("%x%n",localtime(time-3*24*3600));'

to print the date 3 days ago in your current locale.

Thanks a lot for the reply, this script seems to be working , and finally found the version of my shell
Code:
$ [ "`echo "\c" | grep c`" ] && echo ksh93 || echo ksh88
ksh88

Lastly, i'd like to store this date result in a variable and how do i format the date to be represented as

Code:
12_10_2013
i.e dd_mm_yyyy

or maybe

Code:
12-10-2013
i.e dd-mm-yyyy
