Stupid question re: file access

Oi-yoy-yoy !

Feel pretty stupid at the moment....Smilie

I'm trying to write a simple script on a test box... /tmp/testfile
I've written it in vi
it's saved and shows up with ls -al
I'm root (sorry if you dont like it but that's how it is )
I've chmod 755'd it

I'm in /tmp

Code:
#./testfile
bash:./testfile: No such file or directory

I've tried /tmp/testfile too, same thing

I can cat it and vi it and the permissions are -rwxr-xr-x

I'm sure to be doing something daft SmilieSmilie

What is in testfile?

What you described is a common symptom of having a first line in your shell script be something like:
Code:
#!/shell/pathname

where the file specified by /shell/pathname either does not exist, or exists but is not executable.

I can't see anything you're doing wrong.

Have you thought that the error might be generated by a line within your 'testfile'?

Perhaps put an echo command in at line 1 to see if you get output from that.

If you can cat the file then it's there okay.

Code:

#./testfile

should work once you're in the /tmp directory and the file has execute set.

Code:
#!/bin/bsh

Code:
#!/bin/bash

I said it'd be something stupid :0)

Many thanks
