Becoming a system administrator, need some advice.

I've been learning linux and solaris for the past couple months and have been thinking about seeking a systems admin career. Is it worth it to learn solaris? Do many companies really use it or is it a waste of my time? Would learning just linux be a better idea? I see there's more opportunity as a linux admin compared to a solaris admin. Any thoughts? What can I do to learn more about linux/solaris? How do I know what I should be learning to become one?

A friend of mine who works as a C++
Programmer at the NYSE, told me they dumped
All the Sun boxes in favor of Red Hat
On Intel. In NYC, it's a Linux world now.
I'm sure some still use Solaris, but the heady
Days are long gone and the ship has sailed.

Depends on what your job is. I would put it this way. Unix-like systems are very alike and if you are an experienced linux administrator it would not be a big deal to learn AIX, Solaris etc. Most of the tools are very similar and OS (meant unix-like) specialities you can learn quickly especially when you work with experienced colleagues.
If you want to start your carier go with the distro you like most and learn it as good as possible. Once you learn the possibilities and basic features of one, it is only about looking forthe way how to do it on another system or whether it is even possible.
From my experience when I tried to learn Solaris, BSD's, linux, windows and basicaly I ended up with barely usable knowledge. Wide spread is a great thing as long as you can do at least one thing good enough to live from it. I only wish I realized this long time ago.
