RedHat Duplicated file names with home directory symbol appearing in ls .
Why are there duplicated file names listed when I execute ls ?

Result of my ls /root/Desktop :
aaa ca new file~ what what~

There are no duplicates.

what is not the same as what~.

[scott@kvm ~]$ touch what what~
[scott@kvm ~]$ ls -li what*
23655 -rw-rw-r--. 1 scott scott 0 Sep  6 17:51 what
23477 -rw-rw-r--. 1 scott scott 0 Sep  6 17:51 what~

~ is not so much a "home directory symbol" as it is a tilde that just happens to also serve that purpose.

Oh thanks for the clarification. But why would there be the presence of 'what~' after I created the txt file 'what' ?

As a backup file, I believe (but I can't remember what creates it or how, maybe someone can refresh my memory?). If you're done editing what, you can delete what~ if you like.

Example...

If you edit and save "what" then the original copy of "what" will be automatically saved as "what~" which is a BACKUP of "what" before editing...

This gives you ONE chance of returning back to your original "what" if your edit does not
work as expected...

So "~" is similar to ".bak"...
