I am interested in installing a Unix operating system onto my PC. I was wondering which system would be the best for a total newbie and also how much knowledge of programming languages do I need to get decent results with a Unix system?
I really am starting from scratch so please help all that you can... or tell me to stick with Windows if you think I'll be better off with it.

Thanks

I would suggest you install Linux. Redhat, Mandrake, Suse and many other vendors offer complete distributions on CD-ROM that you can install very easily. Just browse the shelves at your local computer store...

You do not need to have knowledge of any programming languages to use Unix -- you should find the X Window System which is packaged with all major distributions to be very intuitive and user friendly. If you want to dig deeper and start to learn more how the system works, then you will need some programming knowledge. As has been said on this board before, there is no better way to learn than by experimenting. That is how many of us learned.

Search the board for posts on recommended books.

Good luck, and have fun.
