UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I'm new to the unix environment. I need to find out what parameters I need to use to save directory structure and the files underneath this directory AND how to restore this directory structure on another unix machine.

Please Help

execute the following:

1. cd to the parent directory of the directory in question

2. tar cvf <directory.tar> <directory_in_question> where directory.tar is the name of the tar file and the directory_in_question is the directory you want a tar file of.

3. put that tar file on a floppy, take the floppy to the machine you want to restore the directory to, then type
tar xvf <direcotry.tar> after you have changed directories to where the tar file is located. hope this helps.

There are also several methods for copying over the
network. For instance...
rcp -pr local_dir remote_machine:remote_dir

If you can NFS mount the remote machine's top level
directory (the one you want to copy to), then you can use
plain old cp -r or even cpio -p

u can try this(copies without NFS).

/usr/bin/tar -cf - <sourcepath> | /usr/bin/rsh <remote machine> " cd /targetpath ; /usr/bin/tar -xBf - "

yes you can, and it works great. however, if you are going to use rsh you need to ensure that you have the /etc/hosts.equiv or the $HOME/.rhosts file set up properly on the target system or that command won't work.

This is one of those "gotcha's".
