I have a better idea.

Talk to your teacher, or network admin person and ask them if it is OK to connect your laptop to the local network so you can connect your laptop to the HP machine.

can you ping 10.25.12.255, if so can you telnet to 10.25.12.255 port 22?

Just talked to IT and the target computer is a single user computer. So I'm going to guess, that I won't be able to log in using ssh from my macbook!?

in reply to your recent suggestion, blackrageous, when i ping it it times out on me
