At a minimum you need:
For 9 pin connectors, cross pins 2 and 3 and 5 straight.
For 25 pin connectors, cross pins 2 and 3 and 7 straight.
Use xon-xoff protocol, or no handshaking if you stay at 9600 or lower baud.
For hardware flow control, you will need a full 9 wire cable.

You will need a crossover cable, with the right ends and pinout to connect directly from a computer to a computer.

I don't know what you mean by 'bidirectional'. Ordinary serial cables and crossovers are both two-way.

Thank you guys for all the help. I have definitely picked a little bit up. Because this thread has gotten very long, and I did figure out what is going on with my floppy, I will start another tread to help me figure out how i can use a cable, and UUCP to get files on my Unix system.
