Access Denied

I login to a server and get a Access Denied Prompt but I clearly lets me into the prompt with Putty.
I do a sudo -s enter my password tells me Access Denied but I am clearly now Root
Just wondering why this is so? what is misconfigured? I mean its not prohibiting me from anything, this is more just a question out of curiousoty.

Code:

[cmap:emmanueli]/home/emmanueli$ sudo -s
Password:
Access denied
Access denied
[cmap:emmanueli]/home/emmanueli$ id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=1(other),2(bin),3(sys),4(adm),5(uucp),6(mail),7(tty),8(lp),9(nuucp),12(daemon)

I guess that the new root shell wants to read something from your home directory; check readability of your shell start files:
Code:
cat .cshrc .tcshrc .bashrc

Or maybe something in /etc/profile (or equivalent) if it's affecting not only root (as the first sentence suggests)?

yeah, it happens on login as well, I went between our other servers checking permisions on /etc/profile and doing diffs on the content and there seems to be nothing different.

Like I said it's not a issue presently, just a nuissnace explainging to users that they are actually on the box when they see access denied left and right

Code:
login: emmanueli
Password:
Access denied
Access denied
