How do I count how many times a specific word appear in a file (ksh)?

A period . is a meta-character which is used to match any character and hence needs to be escaped to preserve its literal meaning.

If it is not escaped it will match all three lines:

INV2143244.41008.ps
INV2143244.41008aps
INV2143244.410081ps

But if it is escaped it will match only one line:

INV2143244.41008.ps
INV2143244.41008aps
INV2143244.410081ps
