How to compare to values returned from sql in shell scripting?

hey i am using this code to connect to sql , store the value in variable and then
compare it with another variable after some time by executing the same query
but the desired result is not coming

Code:
#!/bin/bash
val=$(sqlplus -s rte/rted2@rel76d2 <<ENDOFSQL
set heading off
set feedback off
SELECT MAX(STAT_ID) FROM CVT_STATS;
exit
ENDOFSQL)

nohup ./cvt -f MediationSources.xml &

sleep 60

value=$(sqlplus -s rte/rted2@rel76d2 <<ENDOFSQL
set heading off
set feedback off
SELECT MAX(STAT_ID) FROM CVT_STATS;
exit
ENDOFSQL)

if ["$val" =="$value"] ; then
  echo "FAIL"
else
  echo "PASS"
fi

check your if loop...
let us know the output of val and value.. Is it strig or numeric? looking at it i guess its numeric.. use -eq instead of ==

Code:

if [ $val == $value ] ; then

but this is also not working .
whatever the value of stat_id , whether greater or equal to it is returning
pass.

Have you tried -eq instead of == as suggested in my post?

Perhaps you should start by fixing the syntax of this line:
Code:
if ["$val" =="$value"]

To
Code:
if [ "$val" = "$value" ]

yes i have tried those

Then you need to add some echo debug to see the values of $val and $value, because there looks to be nothing else wrong with the code. And post, please, the exact code you have used, because what you have posted has syntax errors.

Code:
val=$(...)
value=$(...)
...
echo "\"$val\""
echo "\"$value\""
...
