Division of wc output

I have a function that outputs 3 lines for each result and I want to know how many results there are.

so for example

function | wc -l
24

but I want to see the result 8.

so is there a easy way to divide the result?

many ways, here is one

Code:
$ echo 24 | awk '{x=$1/3; print x}'
8

An approach using awk:
Code:
function | awk ' END { print NR / 3 } '

Assuming that you're using a POSIX conforming shell (such as ksh or bash), the following will also work without needing to invoke awk:
Code:
echo $(($(function | wc -l) / 3))

yes this is what I was really looking for. I was not sure where to put the parenthesis.

Thanks

Code:
$ line_cnt=`function | wc -l`
$ result_cnt=$(( line_cnt / 3 ))
$ result_cnt=`expr $line_cnt / 3`
