How to replace / with . in a string?

Hi Friends,
I am new to scripting.
I have a long sting like below.

input string:
Code:
abcdef/ghijkl/aaaaa

I want output as
Code:
abcdef_ghijkl_aaaaa

I would like to replace / with _
Can you please help me with its equivalent shell code.
The string size varies . like it can be a single word like abcdef or multiple words like abcdef/adbcdf

Thanks in advance
Bhasky
