how about awk?
Code:
grep 'stuff' file | awk 'BEGIN {FS=:} {print $2 }'

Using CUT

echo 'http://blabla:9020' | cut -d: -f3

This is homework, isn't it?

Just sed

Code:
echo "http://www:9090" | sed -e "s/.*:\([0-9]\{4\}\)/\1/"

By suggesting an alternate like sed or awk, if the OP is not doing homework, you help anyway. And you don't do somebody's homework. Smilie
