Merge columns from multiple files

Hi all, I've searched the web for a long time trying to figure out how to merge columns from multiple files.

I know paste will append columns like so:
paste file1 file2 file3 file4 file5 ...

But this becomes inconvenient when you want to append a large number of files into a single file.

For example, say I have 20 files each with a single column that I would like to append column wise into a single file.

cat file1

cat file2

cat filen...

a a a etc...
b b b etc...
c c c etc...
d d d etc...
e e e etc...

Is there any way to adapt a code that will work for "N" number for files??

Many thanks,

You didn't mention what system you are using.

In bash you could do sequence expression that takes the form {x..y}
paste file{1..n}

Seriously it's that easy?? I should have known that because I do that for bash loops...

Many thanks,
