Not trying to be harsh so please forgive the following.

I think you may be better served if you simly purchase a non SATA hard drive and and install Linux on there.

I can walk you through using Norton Ghost but that is one, very easy part of this puzzle. Judging from your comments, a Kernel rebuild may be more than you're willing to take on. I don't have an SATA drive but I have rebuilt Linux Kernels for various hardware and software reasons. Options 2 and 3 don't intimidate me.

By the way, have you verified that your system won't let you change your BIOS to legacy ATA mode?

Have you ever changed your computer's BIOS settings?

Check your hardware manual for the key that you must press while booting the computer to enter BIOS edit mode. Once you are in there, you'll be looking for some screen that mentions the hard disk or disk controller. You may find that it indicates that the drive is in "Enhanced" mode. Toggle this value to "Legacy" or whatever else that is not "Enhanced".

Be sure of the what value you are changing, mishandling your BIOS settings can cause you big headaches.

1. Switch the motherboard BIOS back to "legacy ATA mode" (parallel ATA = PATA). Complete a Linux installation. Fetch or build a kernel with support for your chipset. Switch the BIOS setting back. (Potential catch: It's claimed that Dell Optiplex GX270 and Dell Precision Workstation 360 desktop units, using Intel ICH5 SATA-I chipsets, don't support switching to legacy ATA mode. This might be true of some others.)
Pick your favorite distro from the many that you tried and install. Aim for one that you know supports your chipset if you can (2.4.27 maybe). Once installed, then comes the fun of configuring the Kernel. If performance is okay after the install, skip the Kernel rebuild.

Good luck.
