New to SCO UNIX

Hello everyone and thanks for your help in advance. Iama Windows Server administrator/programmer that has inheirited a SCO Unix 5.07 server running legacy applications. My first thought was to install the Unix OS on a separate test environment. However, I am in need of the most basic information to get started. If I log in to the production server under root, does this take me to the top level directory? How do I obtain the size of this directory in order to make the test environment similar? Finally, does copying all of the files in the root copy all of the programs to the other machine?

Sorry for the stupid questions. Any help getting me started would be greatly appreciated.

If you are going to install SCO 5.0.7 on a test server, you need to find the original installation media and install the OS from that. You cannot just copy the files from one system to another to create a test environment.

When you log in a root, type "pwd' to see what directory you are in.

You can use the "df" command to see the mounted filesystems.

Here is a pointer to the SCO 5.0.7 documentation: DocView: Access to SCO OpenServer Documentation. You really should read up on SCO 5.0.7 before attempting a test installation.

Thanks

Thanks so much for the response. I do have the original media and have been reading up on installation. Thanks for the additional documentation. The pwd function under root takes me to \ which, if I am correct is the top level root directory. In reading up on installation, it appears there is a relatively small default size that can be changed. i want to mimic the production box, but haven't figured out how.

Thanks again.

It is the pwd command - not function and the root directory is / not \.

Unix-like operating systems use a single filesystem hierarchy. By the way, Windows can do the same (see the Windows mount command) but it is more usual to designate each filesystem with a drive letter.
