Good point! zsh would require the nonomatch option enabled to match the literal [F03*].

It was careless of me to use the term match for the case when none of the four single characters between the square brackets name an existing file. Without options specifying some other behavior, the standards say that unmatched patterns are passed through unchanged as operands to the utility being invoked. If a file exists whose name is the unmatched pattern, the utility will be able to open the file (assuming it has appropriate permissions) even though the pattern didn't "match" a filename.
