Excluding a specific column from sed replacement

I would like to replace all 0's to 1's throughout my text file. However I do not want column 3 altered. How do I go about doing that? Thanks!

sed does not understand what a column is.

Your best bet would be to use a language like awk, which understands what a column is.

You'd be better served learning the awk language than asking endless questions which are trivially answered in it...

awk '{ for(N=1; N<=NF; N++) { if(N==3) continue; if($N == "0") $N=1 } 1' inputfile
