Changing the prompt

Phew simple question,

I want to display the my directory path in prompt.

Did the following in .profile
PS1=`pwd`
export PS!

Worked, but it always points to HOME directory.

When i do a cd, it doesn't change.

What am i missing.

Thanks

MySQL

Instead of hardsetting PS1=`pwd` which i guess will be first time your home directory when you login.

use :
PS1='$PWD'

in your .bashrc

export PS1='\h/\W\$'

Small confusion:

Your .profile will be executed by the shell which is given in /etc/passwd.

Now you can change your shell to whatever you want.

Righto

So i am using ksh.
That $PWD also gives the present directory and doesn't change.

I use ksh as well. My prompt usually looks like this:
Code:
PS1=`uname -n`':$PWD# '

This works (I use it every day).

Computer

hope you are exporting the PS1 too

export PS1='$PWD'

this setting works fine for me.

Yes ... Rishi is right ...

C this ...

sdev09Smiliewd
/export/home/appsuser

sdev09:PS1='$PWD:'; export PS1

/export/home/appsuserSmiliewd
/export/home/appsuser

/export/home/appsuser:

C .. now if u give this PS1 setting part in ur .profile, the prompt will be as required when u login again ...

Thanks,
