removing parts of a line with SED

hi,

i'm trying to erase all the characters after, and including, the first [ bracket.
Example: test1 test2 test3 [test4 test5] test test [a b c]
Output: test1 test2 test3

this is what I tried, but didn't work
sed "s/*[$[]//" file > testfilename

any suggestions?

thanks,
gammmaman

Code:
echo 'test1 test2 test3 [test4 test5] test test [a b c]' | sed 's/^\([^[][^[]*\).*/\1/'

echo 'test1 test2 test3 [test4 test5] test test [a b c]' | sed -e 's/\[.*//'

Is a little simpler.
